July 8,2009 - Wednesday Night Racing

It was a light showing tonight at the oval, but the racing was very exciting. I would like to extend a great big welcome to first time competitors Rayna Meyer and Greg Miller. It was also great to see long track skater Doug Smith at the oval - maybe he will join us racing next time.

There was a new addition to the Cat 1 group, Andrew Hansen just moved up from Cat 2. He did very well in the shorter distances and in the 20 Lap final worked very hard to keep one of his teammates off the front of the pack (his teammate faded later and finished third). It was also great to see the Midwest Skate Club members working on team tactics. Plan A worked great and we delivered Ovid Westin to the finishline in the 20 lap race just as planned.

David Sarmiento continued his dominance in the Cat 1 division winning all four events as did Kari Cox in the Women/Rec division.

Ian Frederick was the sole Junior competitor and easily won all his events.

The real action was in the Cat 2 division. There were four different winners this evening and the omnium (overall winner) was decided by points that came from consistency in all the events. Jim Deuthman took home the honors tonight winning the Cat 2 omnium with 20 points. Andy Uttke was second with 18 points, followed by John Schulte - 17 points, and Doug Hansen 15 points. This was by far the closest grouping of Cat 2 skaters this season!

Racing continues next week with the Madison. The distances will be 4000 and 6000m for both Cat 1 and Cat 2 divisions. The Madison Champions will be crowned next week! Get your team together and practice at the oval - it is free to skate there! If you need to change teammates that is not a problem - we will work it out on a case by case basis for the overall.

Check back for posted results from tonights racing.
